I saw this painting by fellow Pennsylvanian Charles Demuth for the first time at the Whitney in February. It’s such a beautiful view of what can be often seen as an ugly industrial structure. I wonder, looking at it today, what structures from our pre-virus existence (physical, social, psychic, emotional, industrial) are now falling apart and will seem so outdated after this, though perhaps beautiful still from a distance.
